How to Write a CV by Amber Rolfe Writing a CV can be a stressful task, especially if you’re starting from scratch…And although there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for the perfect CV, it should always be clearly formatted and short enough for a recruiter to scan quickly â€" and most importantly â€" tailored to the role you’re applying for.Not sure where to start? Here are some basic rules on how to write a CV:What information should I include on my CV?CVs should never be completely formulaic, but there are a few things they should always contain:1. Personal details:It may sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people forget to include their name, email, contact phone number and address. To avoid any awkward moments, make sure these are clearly presented at the top of your CV. ‘Curriculum Vitae’ is an unnecessary title â€" your name is not.2. Personal statementAs it’s the first thing that’s shown on your CV, a personal statement is an essential part of standing out fr om the crowd. It explains who you are, what you’re offering, and what you’re looking for. Aim to prove why you’re suitable in one short and succinct paragraph.3. Work experience: This section should include all of your relevant work experience, listed with the most recent first. Include your job title, the name of the organisation, time in post, and your key responsibilities.4. Achievements: This is your chance to show how your previous experience has given you the skills needed to make you a suitable candidate. List all of your relevant skills and achievements (backing them up with examples), and make it clear how you would apply these to the new role.5. Education:Your educational experience and achievements should be listed here, along with dates, the type of qualification and/or the grade you achieved â€" although the specific parts of education that you include in your CV will depend on your individual situation. For example, if you have more educational achievements than work experience, placing an emphasis on this section is a good idea.6. Hobbies and interests: You don’t always need to include hobbies and interests in your CV, but mentioning relevant ones could back up your skills and help you to stand out from the crowd â€" not to mention give you something to talk about at an interview. Just don’t say you enjoy socialising with friends just for the sake of including something. A great email client is critical for online communication. Security is a growing concern, so anti-virus software is also absolutely required to protect vital information. While some telecommuters are able to get by with just a landline or cellphone to stay in touch, others must make inbound and outbound calls to clients and colleagues, so Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) technology, as well as a headset, or speaker and microphone are required. These forms of telephony require a lot memory and other computer resources to run well, which further reinforces the need for telecommuters to have a newer, up-to-date computer system.   The need for storage and data backup systems is a key consideration that is often overlooked. Remote workers must be disciplined in order to be able to succeed working from home. In addition to setting up an office in a quiet part of the home, telecommuters should set a schedule and let their friends and family know what hours they will be working in their office, and ask that they not be contacted during this time unless it is an absolute emergency in order to increase productivity. Every minute that goes by is money you arent earning. You need to develop a sense of urgency to drive your actions. These are six ways you can increase your odds of landing your next job faster! 1.   Invest time upfront in finding your focus By understanding your strengths, you will be much more likely to find the appropriate opportunities, as opposed to randomly applying for just anything.   Finding your focus means learning about you and learning about companies.   I have seen job seekers waste precious time searching without really knowing where they are going. Make a list! What are your strengths and weaknesses? What skills do you enjoy using? What kinds of tasks and projects get you excited? 2.   Know your values. Finding the right “fit” isn’t just about the perfect skills match.   I bet you’ve seen at least one job posting and thought, “This is the perfect job for me!”   But are you really? What do you know about the company? Is its mission aligned with your values? What are the people like who work there? What is your purpose and can you do it there? Discover as much as you can about the companys mission, culture and people as possible. 3.   Manage your time well Without structure, it is just too easy to get distracted. You will want a strategy first and then you can design your tactical approach.   Don’t get lured into surfing the internet.   It is too easy. Be purposeful and proactive in how you spend your time. Dont just respond to jobs online. Are you following up with networking leads in a timely manner? Are you spending too much time customizing your resume and cover letter? What havent you made enough time to do? Remember, finding a job is a full-time job! Heres how to manage your job search time. And by all means, get a calendar! 4.   Invest in activities with the greatest return on investment Companies consistently report that the majority of their external new hires come from referrals. And don’t forget to watch the careers page on target companies. This is also a more direct route to a job (versus the major job boards). How much time are you spending staying connected to past colleagues? Are you using your contacts inside companies to get a referral? Do you have a target list of companies you would like to work for? The idea here is to invest your time networking.   If the rumor is true and over 70% of jobs are secured through networking, imagine spending about 70% of your time invested in reaching out to people you know instead of chasing posted jobs! If you think networking is a waste of time, read this  Networking is a Waste of Time- Or Is It? 5. Never stop looking Do not stop looking (applying, networking and interviewing) until you walk into the office. And even then, you should probably keep looking for a new job- just in case this isnt what you had hoped it would be.   That means NOT letting recruiters know you are close to accepting a job. Dont opt out of interview opportunities. And do not stop networking, ever! 6.   Assess what is working and what is not Your job search will take longer than you want.   Don’t beat yourself up. Instead, conduct an assessment of what you’ve been doing and what the outcomes have been. Are you getting interviews? Look back over your activities for the past 14-30 days or so. What breakthroughs have you had? How did those come to be? You want to do more of whats working! Make the most of your job search and take steps to speed up your job search!
